The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday revealed that a consignment of 10,000 metric tonnes of urea (fertiliser) has been brought to the Colombo Port on July 9, despite the ban on importing and using chemical fertiliser.

Former JVP MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa told a news conference that they have received this information through reliable sources that the consignment of urea had been brought to the Colombo Port on July 9.
He asked if the Government had allowed the Companies partial to the Government to import chemical fertiliser despite the ban.

Dr. Jayatissa said the President reiterated that he would not reverse his decision to ban importing chemical fertiliser, a few days ago, and urged the President and the Government to reveal its stance on the matter.
He said the Government should clarify as to how this consignment of urea was brought into the country.
