State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura said yesterday a stock of 2,350 metric tons of local brown sugar manufactured by both the Lanka Sugar Company and the Galoya Sugar Company had already been issued to the SATHOSA outlets and the Co-Operative Societies.
He said brown sugar would be available to the consumers without any scarcity from today.
He said the government-owned business undertaking of Lanka Sugar Company had issued 1,750 metric tons and the Galoya Sugar Company 600 metric tons of sugar. The State Minister said that brown sugar would be available without any scarcity for Rs.130 a kilo from today.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Lanka Sugar Company Janaka Nimalachandra said the production per day of the Sevenagala and Hingurana sugar factories was between 250 and 300 metric tons. He said the production of the two factories last year had been 35,000 metric tons and that they were hopeful of increasing it to 50,000 metric tons this year.
