Around 35 acres of land out of 40 acres of the Welikada Prison premises in Borella will be set aside for investments after the prison complex is moved to Horana.
During a discussion held at Temple Trees with the participation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, it was revealed that the Urban Development Authority is already planning to set aside its chapel ward and prison headquarters building for a hotel project.
State Minister Lohan Ratwatte said that several investors have already agreed to the project.
The Welikada Prison complex will be moved to a 200 acres land in Millewa, Horana.
The Prisons Department and UDA officials informed the Prime Minister that the Rs.30 billion project is expected to be completed by 2024.
Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said that the Magazine Prison will be restored first at a new land in Horana while the other prisons and the Welikada gallows will also be taken to Horana.
Magazine, Welikada, Colombo Remand and Women's Prisons will be established in Horana under the same name and the prison hospital, prison training school, rehabilitation center and prison intelligence unit will also be established in Millewa while prison headquarters will be built in Battaramulla and an official quarters in Malabe.
The Commissioner General of Prisons told the Prime Minister that when the Women's Prison is established in Millewa, a day care center for children will also be set up for female inmates with children.
