The Department of Census and Statistics in its recent report on the labour force survey for the quarter 1 of 2024 reveals only 25.9 per cent of jobs consider A level and above qualifications for employment. Whereas 43.7 per cent of jobs require knowledge up to grade 10 for employment according to currently employed statistics.
The data in the report shows that from 2018 to the quarter 1 of 2024 the highest percentage of knowledge required for employment remains under the category of knowledge up to grade 10 fluctuating from 45.9 to 43.7 per cent.
The statistics also highlight close to 11.3 per cent of currently employed Sri Lankans have knowledge only up to grade 5.
The DCS also states that only 6.3 per cent of currently employed people are from the age of 20 to 24 years as well as 8.8 per cent of currently employed people are from the age of 25 to 29 years, the highest being 64.5 per cent of currently employed people being over the age of 40.
