Some 80 members of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) had spent Rs 3.4 million
( Rs3,457,900.00 ) on a tour to the North , some council members said.
JVP member of CMC Hemantha Kumara told Daily Mirror that the original estimate for the tour was Rs 5.5 million but it was adjusted to Rs 3.4 million as some of the council members refused to participate in it. “ We the JVP members refused to participate in the programme as we did not want to waste rate payers money,” he said.
“ We were told that the Western province governor approved it. It was claimed that it will be a sharing of experience with the Municipal Council of Jaffna and other local bodies. It was also informed that Jaffna Library would be linked up with the Public Library Colombo but we do not know what was done about it,” he said.
However the CMC had received an invitation on February 2. 2022 from the Chairman Walikamam South West Pradeshiya Sabha A. Jebanesan inviting the members of the CMC for an experience sharing session. The itinerary of the tour included visits to some local bodies in the province.
The hotel charges for the tour had been estimated as Rs 2.6 million, transport cost Rs 394,000, Rs 229,500 for sports clothing, and Rs 200,000 for water bottles and short eats.
