Ajith Nivard Cabraal appointed as Central Bank Governor

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed former State Minister Ajith Nivard Cabraal as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka with effect from September 15, President’s Media Division said.  

Cabraal is a Chartered Accountant by profession. Prior to his appointment, Cabraal served as a Ministry Secretary as well he also served as the Governor of the Central Bank for nearly 09 years. Cabraal resigned from the National List of Members of Parliament of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday. Meanwhile, SLPP has submitted the name of Jayantha Ketagoda to the Elections Commission as the National List MP to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Cabraal, SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said.

Ketagoda had earlier resigned as an MP to make way for Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa to enter Parliament.
