Whist stating that a new resolution by UNHRC contain allegations on financial crimes, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Economic Policy Centre called for a local level probe on the matter and legal reforms to meet this challenge.

The SJB MPs handling the party’s economic policy centre, Harsha de Silva, Eran Wickramaratne and Kabir Hashim called for appointment of a select committee to determine as to who has been engaged in financial crimes, news laws that persist with UN Stolen Assets Recovery Programme and setting up of an independent Prosecutor office.

Dr. De Silva said those who were engaged in financial crimes are still in the government. “We did not see any change in the government other than UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe becoming the President. However the official resolution of UNHCR does not include any names to our knowledge,” he said.  While expressing his concern on the reports that new licences are to be given for new casinos, De Silva called for the appointment of a gaming regular or a gaming regulatory body.

MP Hashim said the recent appointment of 37 state ministers is also a financial crime.
