Armed forces and police should now bow down to the people’s will and work for them, Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa said when he and others were prevented from entering the Independence square yesterday morning.

“Everyone has to bow down to the peoples will and work for them instead of working for anyone else, people are without gas and fuel and other essential goods they need. Therefore, police and armed forces should support the people,” he said, while protesting against the action taken by the police and the armed forces to stop SJB MPs from entering Independence square.

“We only wanted to go and stage a peaceful protest in front of late Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake’s statue. We never expected to create violence,” he added.

MP Patali Champika Ranawaka warned that police and armed forces will fall into difficulty if they prevent MPs. The MPs were seen arguing with the police. “You must work for the people in the country instead of working for a small group.” They were heard shouting ‘Gota Go Home Gota Go home’, a while later.

A large number of MPs including Patali Champika Ranawaka, Eran Wickramaratne, Harsha de Silva, Mujibur Rahman, Rajitha Senaratne, S. M. Marikkar, Mayantha Dissanayake, Mano Ganesan and Nalin Bandara Jayamaha were among the MPs who participated in the protest.
