Referring to the incident where the owner of Al Obaidani apparel factory at Katana was allegedly assaulted by an unidentified group, the Board of Investment (BOI) said necessary arrangements are being made to provide an alternative site for the company to continue its operations uninterrupted.

In a media release, the BOI condemned the recent incident, adding that it is closely working with the management of the factory for the continuity of operations in Sri Lanka despite the company having suspended its operations temporarily.

“From the time of the incident, active communication has been established with respective law enforcement agencies to ensure the security and well-being of the Omani investors and factory premises. An impartial investigation is underway to inquire into the incident and action will be taken based on the findings,” it added.

The Omani investor and security officer were physically assaulted by a group of unidentified individuals on 30 March.

It has been reported that the group of individuals who assaulted the factory owner are close associates of a State Minister. However, the accused State Minister made a statement in Parliament denying his involvement into the incident.

However, in a situation where Sri Lanka is bouncing back in terms of attracting potential investors, incidents of this nature will definitely have a serious bearing on the economy and hamper investor-confidence.
