The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) announced that police have permitted Attorneys-at-Law who are required to attend to urgent Court work, to cross borders upon production of their respective BASL Membership Identity Card.
BASL Secretary Rajeev Amarasuriya said Senior DIG -Crimes and Traffic Range and Police Media Spokesman Ajith Rohana confirmed that travel restrictions would not apply in respect of Court work in terms of Police RTM Message No. 88 of 5th June 2021 and above status quo continues at present.
However, BASL requests its members to make use of this privilege only for essential or urgent court work and members are advised to be in court attire when crossing borders.
Meanwhile, in a communication to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), BASL has emphasised the need to ensure that judges do not make adverse orders arising from situations and applications made which are related to restrictions and difficulties due to the pandemic.
