Bangladesh High Commissioner meets with Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena

Bangladesh High Commissioner Tareq Md Ariful Islam met Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on Thursday 23 December 2021 at the Education Ministry and discussed issues of mutual interest, such the welfare of the Sri Lankan expatriate workers’ community in the Bangladeshi garment industry, progress of agreements in agriculture and shipping and future areas of collaboration.  

Both Minister Gunawardena and the High Commissioner reiterated their commitment towards the friendship between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and expressed that they looked forward to the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations which would coincide with the upcoming BIMSTEC summit to be held in Colombo next year, to be chaired by Sri Lanka,  which Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to attend.  


The High Commissioner also expressed hopes to commemorate the International Mother Tongue Day in February 2022 through an islandwide children’s art competition for which Minister Gunawardena offered his full support.  
Minister Gunawardena and the High Commissioner discussed other matters of mutual interest, such as the importing of high quality paper from Bangladesh for the production of text books as well as commencing scientific collaboration in Lychee production with the University of Rajarata.
