The Central Environment Authority will conduct the national ceremony to mark World Wetlands Day, which falls on February 2 at Colombo’s urban wetland with a rich biodiversity, ‘Diyasaru Uyana’ in Thalawathugoda today and tomorrow.
The two-day national ceremony, which is being organised by the CEA in collaboration with the Department of Wildlife Conservation, is expected to be attended by Minister of Environment Keheliya Rambukwella and senior politicians, diplomats, state officials and environment enthusiasts.
A spokesperson for the CEA said the main event is scheduled to take place today from 8.30am to 1.00pm at the Diyasaru Uyana premises in Thalawathugoda.
World Wetlands Day is an environmentally related celebration that dates back to 1971 when several environmentalists gathered to reaffirm protection and love for wetlands, which are water ecosystems containing plant life and other organisms that bring ecological health in abundance to not only water bodies but environments as a whole.
The CEA invites all environment enthusiasts to take part in this special occasion to witness and experience a range of awareness programmes etc.
