The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated an investigation into the documentary aired by Britain’s Channel 4 TV over Sri Lanka’s Easter Bombings in 2019.
The documentary, titled ‘Sri Lanka’s Easter Bombings’, aired on September 6, 2023, and includes a statement from Muhammad Millar Muhammad Hansir, also known as Azad Hansir Maulana, who was a media presenter and finance secretary for the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) party, led by former state minister Sivaneshthurai Chandrakanthan, also known as Pillaiyan. Police said that an external organization submitted a formal complaint to the Ministry of Public Security regarding the documentary. The complaint was subsequently forwarded to Police Headquarters and handed over to the CID for further investigation.
The CID is investigating several charges, including the dissemination of controversial information about the Easter attacks and potential conspiracies mentioned in the Penal Code.
The department has also presented the matter to the Fort Magistrate’s Court on November 11, police said
Meanwhile, former State Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, alias Pillayan, has been summoned to the CID today (12) to provide a statement regarding a new investigation into the Easter Sunday attack, according to official sources.
