Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith who met Pope Francis in the Vatican yesterday had briefed the leader of the Catholic Church on the struggle which the local church carries out  to uncover the truth behind the Easter Sunday attacks.

Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo Rev. J. D. Anthony Jayakody told a press conference that Cardinal Ranjith briefed the Pope on the steps taken by the local church to uncover the truth behind the Easter Sunday attacks and the lethargic attitude of the Sri Lankan authorities in uncovering the truth on the attacks. “ He  had also explained the need to obtain international support to mete out justice to those who were affected by the attack,” Bishop Jayakody said..

Asked whether the church’s action would end up Sri Lanka coming under economic sanctions, Member of the Communications Committee Archdiocese of Colombo Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando said it is the Sri Lanka government who should bear the responsibility for such an eventuality. “ It is the government which failed to uncover the truth behind the Easter Sunday mayhem and failed to implement the recommendations made by the presidential commission which probed the attacks,” Fr. Gamini said.

Fr Gamini said it is too early to state anything definite on the reports which said Cardinal Ranjith is planning to visit the USA as well.
