In view of contempt of court allegations against Public Service Commission (PSC) for its failure to pay the salary of former CID sub inspector Sugath Mendis who was interdicted along with former CID Director Shani Abeysekera, the Supreme Court yesterday specially fixed the petition to be heard on Friday (23).

The Supreme Court was informed that the PSC has so far failed to comply with the interim order issued by Supreme Court directing to pay the salary of former CID sub inspector Sugath Mendis.  On May 18, the Supreme Court ordered that former CID sub inspector be paid his full salary and entitlements with effect from 23/03/2022.  Supporting the motion before Supreme Court three-judge-bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice A.H.M.D. Nawaz and Mahinda Samayawardena, Senior Counsel Viran Corea stated that the conduct of the PSC is an embarrassment to the court officials. The Chief Justice observed that the allegation levelled against the PSC seem to be serious since order made by court has not been taken seriously.

In his motion, Sugath Mendis stated that respondents including the PSC have acted in a contemptuous manner disregarding the interim order issued by Supreme Court.
