Mayor of the UNP controlled Chilaw Urban Council- Thushan Abeysekara and his brother Ishan Abeysekara were arrested yesterday by the Chilaw Police in connection with the alleged assault on two young men of the area.
The suspects were the sons of former UNP MP for the Puttalam District -Shantha Abeysekara
One of the victims was a businessman’s son in the Chilaw Town and the other, a resident of the area. They complained to police that the Mayor and his brother had assaulted them at Sedawatta in Chilaw.
Meanwhile three people belonging to the group of the assailants were admitted to the Chilaw hospital complaining that it was the two young men who had assaulted them.
Investigations revealed that a previous animosity between the two parties had resulted in the incident.
The suspects were to be produced before the Chilaw Magistrate yesterday afternoon.
