The growing issue of unhealthy competition and mounting pressures faced by school children is mainly caused by ‘helicopter parents,’ those who closely monitor and excessively control their children’s lives to ensure perfection, Professor Harendra de Silva, the founding Chairman of the National Child Protection Authority said yesterday.
“This drive for perfection is fueled by societal expectations, pushing children to excel in all facets of life,” he said.
The professor also highlighted the need for a multifaceted approach to address the complex issue. “The whole society is insecure. You don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow in terms of the rupee, your income, your job or whatever,” he said. Drawing attention to the media’s role, Professor de Silva urged for a shift in focus. “Media, both traditional and social, can perpetuate negative messages.
The media’s portrayal of self-harm and violence, for instance, can inadvertently sensationalize these acts.”
“Instead of solely highlighting negative aspects, the media should spotlight positive actions that can mitigate the situation. By doing so, the media can play a pivotal role in shaping perceptions and offering solutions rather than sensationalizing issues,” he further added.
Professor de Silva advocated for a collaborative approach involving various stakeholders. He suggested that economic issues, societal pressures, and also parental expectations should all be considered while crafting solutions.
