A common opposition alliance will be in place next year as there will be a political turnaround, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.

Mr. Wijewardene who was speaking to party activists in Moneragala District said a grand opposition alliance comprising UNP, SJB and other political parties will come into place next year.

“There will be a political turnaround next year as the present government might not be in power for long given the internal conflicts. We have to be prepared for this shift. A common opposition alliance is the need of the hour. This alliance will take shape next year,” Mr. Wijewardene said.

“Some Ministers in the government are currently talking to our leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. He is a capable leader who could build up the nation. Also, those in the SJB are not our enemies. The common enemy is the government. I am sure SJB and others will get together to form a common alliance next year. We in the UNP should organise ourselves and be prepared for this turnaround. Our leader had given me the responsibility of overseeing the organisation of the UNP in Badulla and Moneragala. I will be visiting the districts every month,” he added.

“Sri Lanka will face more problems in the future with the shutting down of Sapugaskanda refinery. There will also be a shortage of aviation fuel. Aircraft will not be able to fly through Sri Lanka. This will affect the tourism industry. The dollar issue will become worse as a result. There will also be a shortage of food,” he also said.
