The controversial letter, issued by the Regional Director of Health Services in Matale, instructing medical specialists aged 60 and above to retire by December 31 was withdrawn following agitation by specialists.
The letter exclusively obtained by the Daily Mirror, had further directed institutional heads in the district to ensure compliance with this order, holding them accountable for any misconduct by specialists continuing to work beyond January 2025.
The move sparked widespread concern among the medical fraternity, as it contradicted a Court of Appeal ruling that extended the retirement age for specialist doctors in state hospitals to 63 years.
The uncertainty surrounding the directive arose from the failure of the Ministry of Public Administration to issue an official circular reflecting the court’s decision.
A senior official representing the medical fraternity told Daily Mirror they would not hesitate to take legal action under contempt of court if such suppression continued.
This bureaucratic delay has placed over 200 medical specialists at risk of premature retirement, exacerbating fears of a potential healthcare crisis in the region.
Specialists in Matale and beyond have emphasised the urgent need for clarity, calling on authorities to respect the legal framework and ensure uninterrupted medical services for the public.
