Around 965 containers detained by the Sri Lanka Customs are lying either inside port terminals or at customs examination yards due to pending investigations as of the first half of this year, the report submitted to Parliament by Ways and Means Committee has revealed.
The committee report said one reason for this situation is the non-finalization of investigations and pending court cases according to the report.
The report noted that the customs appeal procedure is time consuming and it is a lengthy process which frustrates importers and exporters who seek a timely solution. The investigations and appeals of customs should be finalized within a short period of time.
It has been recommended the amendment of Customs Ordinance to make it on par with the 21st century and it is also recommended that the ordinance should be amended to reduce the percentage of money credited to the customs officers management and compensation funds ( Reward Fund) and to expedite the customs related appeals and inquiries.
