Cyclonic Storm Tauktae expected to bring gusty winds in all provinces: DMC

Cyclonic Storm Tauktae, which has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm is expected to bring gusty winds in all provinces during the coming weeks, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) which quoted the Department of Meteorology said yesterday. 

“It will bring gusty winds, which will travel at 50 kmph in the Northern and North Central Provinces, while it will bring winds which will travel at 40 kmph in North-Western and Central Provinces, and winds which will travel at 30 kmph in other provinces. However, the impact of this system, on the weather over the island is expected to reduce gradually,” DMC said. 


The fishermen were asked to stay away from the sea in the coming days. 


“The Cyclonic Storm ‘Tauktae” over the southeast Arabian Sea is intensified into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm and lay centred at 02.30 a.m. of 16th May, near latitude 14.7°N and longitude 72.7°E. It is very likely to intensify further during the next 12 hours. The system is likely to move nearly north-north westwards and cross Gujarat coast India during 18th May,” DMC added. 


Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation said the water levels of Kelani, Kalu, Gin, Nilwala, Maha Oya, and Attanagalu Oya has begun to recede.
