Eight protesters including popular actress Damitha Abeyratne, General Secretary of Ceylon Teachers Union Joseph Stalin and youth activists Rathindu Senaratne alias ‘Ratta’ were yesterday ordered to be released on bail after being appeared before Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
On a previous occasion, these civil society activists were noticed to appear before Court for allegedly obstructing police officers from carrying out their duty while engaging in a protest blocking the main entrance to the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on May 30.
Each suspect was ordered to be released on a surety bail by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage. Further magisterial inquiry fixed for November 28. The suspects were ordered to appear before Slave Island Police Station on Wednesday (10).
President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya appeared on behalf of the suspects.
