A woman bitten by a jackal which had come into her home about a month ago died of hydrophobia on Monday night (10) after being admitted to the Kalutara General Hospital at Nagoda.
The victim M. Rupalatha (51) from a family from Wedagoda in Beruwala had been living in a temporary house in a state land near the Wedagoda public cemetery.
A pack of jackals had been seen roaming in the area, one animal had entered her house on November 11 and bitten her, She had failed to obtain medical treatment until she was taken ill. Meanwhile, the Kalutara National Health Institute yesterday launched a programme to create public awareness on the danger of rabid jackals and dogs in the area. Administrative PHI R.G.Sinhabahu said immediate steps were being taken to vaccinate dogs and cats against Rabies at four centres.
