Death toll of the human elephant conflict has been increasing in alarming proportions in the Anuradhapura wildlife zone, as revealed by the District Committee to Pay Compensation for Damages Caused by Wild Elephants.
The committee met under the chairmanship of Anuradhapura Additional District Secretary Sandya Abesekara.
Wildlife Conservators told the meeting that 33 people and 70 wild elephants had been killed in the human elephant conflict for the first ten months of the year.
It transpired that the Committee had approved compensation payments amounting to Rs. 57 million for the first ten months of the year and that Rs.33.9 million of it had already been paid.
Asst. District Secretary Ayomi Ratnayaka, Asst.Director Wildlife Conservation Department W.M.K.S.Chandrarathne, Asst.Director, Disaster Management I.A.K. Ranaweera, Officers-in-Charge of the Subject Lakmali Wanigasekara and Prasadhi Herath were present.
