The Department of Civil Security has embarked on a mission to supply organic fertilizer and already produced 1,041,682 kgs of Organic fertilizer and is targeting a total production of 3,500,000 kgs by the end of the year.
Director and Media Spokesman Department of Civil Security Lieutenant Colonel D. J. S. L. Ponweera said officers of the Department attached to training schools have been allocated the task of manufacturing organic fertilizer in line with the government’s current policy of shifting towards the usage of organic fertilizer from chemical fertiliser.
Stocks of fertilizer will be subjected to testing in laboratories that are run by the Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Agrarian Services and Sri Lanka Fertilizer Corporation. The stocks will be handed over to Sri Lanka Fertilizer Corporation after quality testing.
Officers of the Department of Civil Security Organic Fertilizer manufacturing plant in Wilpattu said they use water plants, Glyceria plants and animal waste to manufacture fertilizer. Finding animal waste is a challenge, according to the officers. The officers who are in charge of the plant said a high amount of raw materials are needed for the production, Accordingly, 6,000 kgs of raw materials have to be used to produce 3,000 kgs of organic fertilizer. “This is the main issue, but we have managed to produce quality crops using organic fertilizer,” they said. The Department of Civil security had already begun planting papaya and has embarked on a mission to export them to Dubai.
