Train service in the southern coastal line was crippled last morning when the Colombo bound Ruhunu Kumari express from Beliatta derailed at Rillamba near Boossa railway station last morning.
The derailment had caused damage to the railway line and steps were being taken for repairs and to re-rail the train.
Meanwhile, a tense atmosphere prevailed at the Galle railway station when hundreds of passengers who had obtained tickets to travel by Vavuniya and Colombo bound trains demanded a refund of the fare.
The worst affected were the passengers who had made reservations on the Vavuniya bound Rajarata Regina express from Beliatta.
The up trains operated between Beliatta and Boossa and the down trains between Colombo and Boossa.
The passengers travelling to Colombo, Matara and Beliatta were transferred to the trains that terminated at Boossa railway station.
