Health authorities have sounded alarm over a viral disease called ‘Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome’ spreading among pigs, hogs or boars in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to Daily Mirror, Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health Dr. Hemali Kothalawala, said humans are not at risk from consuming the meat of infected animals.
Meanwhile,Department of Wildlife Conservation Director (Health), Dr. Tharaka Prasad said the disease is spreading like an outbreak across multiple areas.
He also stated that there is no evidence of the disease affecting humans.
Nevertheless, he said the issue would have great bearing on farms leading to a decrease in production.
“Areas including Yala, Chilaw and Balapitiya have been identified, and precautionary measures are in place to prevent the further spread of the disease,” he pointed out.
