The Department of Archaeology has warned Chief Incumbent of Aukana Raja Maha Vihare that legal action will be taken against him in future if he commits acts like the draping of the historic Aukana Buddha statue in a saffron robe.
Issuing a statement, the Department said it inquired about this act which recieved wide publicity on social media. According to the statement, the monk had said he did it in keeping with ‘Katina pinkama’ and no harm was intended to the archaeological value of the statue. The statement said the monk was asked to seek permission from the archaeological authorities about such activities and as otherwise legal action would be instituted against him.
