Fertiliser importing companies claim that chemical fertiliser price had gone up because of the ban imposed by the Government on importing fertiliser but we cannot allow them to sell fertiliser at higher prices as the Gazette has been revoked, said the Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage addressing the media in Kandy on January 8.
“With the ban imposed on importing chemical fertiliser, black markets have emerged to sell fertiliser at higher prices. Therefore, we expect to regulate fertiliser price. I believe farmers will be able to buy chemical fertiliser for the next Yala season at the market price. We increased the paddy buying price from 50 rupees to 75 rupees to prevent any injustice happening to farmers in case of crop damage.
