Deaths of marine species could be expected as the debris, containing chemicals have mixed with the sea water, the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) said.
The Agency said they had taken steps to ban fishing in the proximity.
Speaking to Daily Mirror, NARA Chairman Professor A. Navaratnarajah said that fishing could only continue through the Multi-day boats, which were located away from the place where fire engulfed the vessel.
“We have deployed our experts to the area where the incident has occurred in order to inspect and assess the damage caused to the marine species and plants,” Prof. Navaratnarajah.
He added that it would take a little more time for them to determine the whole damage caused to flora and fauna and said that they would engage in continuous monitoring.
