Fire walking in Valliamma Devala

Fire walking ceremony in the Valliamma Devala in Kataragama was performed yesterday at 9.00am with the participation of more than 100 devotees. It marked the commencement of performing the traditional fire walking ritual in the Kataragama Esala festival. 

Basnayake Nilame of the Maha Devala Dishan Gunasekara was present at the occasion. 


The fire walking ceremony of the Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devala was scheduled to take place at 4.00am today with the participation of more than 300 devotees. 


The 12 day procession in the Kataragama Esala festival would parade the streets at night. 


Meanwhile, the Esala festival in Devi Nuwara Sri Vishnudevala is now being held. It would end after the Randoli procession that commenced on August 05 with the traditional Peli processions. 


The final Randoli procession would take place on August 11. The festival would end on August 20, after performing week long traditional rites and rituals in praise of the God.
