Commenting on the move by the CID to carry out a probe on the information revealed by the Channel 4 documentary on the Easter Sunday attacks, the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka said it is a welcome move but stressed that it should not drag on.
Member of the Communications Committee Archdiocese of Colombo Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando told Daily Mirror that the decision by the CID to start a fresh probe on the Channel 4 documentary on Easter Sunday attacks was a welcome move as it is something which the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka always wanted.
“National Catholic Committee for Justice to Easter Sunday Attack Victims which include Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, other bishops and priests sent a letter to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe asking him to carry out a probe on the information revealed on the Channel 4 attacks. We included our observations in this letter and we also informed him that we don’t have any faith in the committee which he had appointed. However, nothing was done about it. However, we are happy about the resuming of an investigation by the CID under the present government,” Fr. Fernando said.
“However this probe should not drag on as there is enough evidence on the attacks. Therefore, we expect that the investigation will end without being dragged on for too long,” he added. It was announced on Monday that the CID has begun a fresh probe on the information revealed by the Channel 4 documentary on Easter Sunday attacks where the secretary of former MP and TMVP Leader Sivasesathurai Chandrakanthan and Asad Moulana revealed some information on the April 21 attack. Former MP Chandrakanthan has already been summoned by the CID for questioning.
