The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday announced that they have decided to launch an islandwide token strike from this morning against the government’s move to unleash violence on the unarmed peaceful people’s struggle and against the barbaric attack after imposing a state of emergency.

Addressing the media, GMOA Secretary Dr. Senal Fernando said steps are being taken to ensure that emergency medical services of the people who are already under pressure and the emergency medical services and emergency services of all those who come to hospitals in the face of the violence unleashed by the government are looked into by deploying more doctors for the purpose.

He also said all our branch associations have already been informed to prepare Emergency Response Teams in all hospitals island wide.

All branch Associations will hold emergency Branch Committee meetings at 8 am today to review the situation in the country, and further decisions on the future course of action of the GMOA will be taken at the Emergency Central Committee meeting to be convened at 10 am today.

Instead of listening to the people, the President, as the Minister of Defence, should take full responsibility for this barbaric attack on the suppression of the unarmed peaceful struggle.

Dr. Senal Fernando said parliament immediately rescinded the state of emergency imposed on freedom of speech and peaceful protest in violation of fundamental human rights. The GMOA said action must be taken to ensure the people’s right to protest and national security.
