The archaeological site of Gal Endan Gala monastery that dates back to the reign of King Dutugemunu has been left to the mercy of the treasure hunters who are causing extensive damage to the archaeological remains.

Residents of the area have requested Kahatagasdigiliya police and the Department of Archaeology to provide adequate protection to the historic monastery. Chairman of the Ranpathvila Civil Defence Committee, retired principal K.M. Chitrasena said, he with a group of villagers made a complaint to the police.

He said that according to the Mahawansa and Thupawansa chronicals, Gal Endan Gala monastery had been built by Vihara Maha Devi during the reign of King Dutugemunu.

Chairman of the Civil Defence Committee pointed out that a boulder had been blasted creating more than a 30ft deep pit in search of treasures.

Residents of the area said the treasure hunters were receiving the patronage of a leading politician in the area and that a local politician was behind the racket. They said the police and the archaeological officials visited the site on inspection, but no action was taken.
