The state of food emergency is not needed if the government regulates the market forces by participating in wholesale trading, Water Supply Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara said.

“Sri Lanka should follow China where the government intervenes and ensure that essential items are available to people at affordable prices. The emergency will not be needed if such steps are taken,” the Minister said. “However, the emergency regulations are required to be invoked now to deal with ‘trade terrorism which exists in Sri Lanka at the moment. It is essential to deploy the security forces to apprehend the trade terrorists,” he added. “The opposition says those who hoard stocks are friends of the government. Isn’t it good to have a President who raises his sword against his own friends?” Mr. Nanayakkara asked. “I remember what my father said years ago. He said God went wrong as he created both thieves and traders,” he also said.
