Government should follow the trade associations and go for a lockdown as a self-lockdown could destabilize the nation, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.

“Going for self-lockdown has become a trend as trade associations are going for a self-lockdown in many areas. People are purchasing essential goods at high prices. This could disrupt the nation. Anyway the trade associations are carrying out their duty. Government should follow their example,” Mr. Wijewardene said.

“People will not die of hunger if the country is locked down for three weeks. Also we have to question whether the country is run by the trade associations. Government seemes to be waiting in silence till the country was completely disrupted,” he added.

“One also feels that a government is not needed when he looks at the way self-lock downs are imposed. Trade associations are actually doing what the government should do. The current situation has made it clear that the present government is unable to rule the nation” he also said.

“Our Leader met the President recently and handed him a copy of the UNP policy documents which comprises 21 proposals. However we are saddened that some sections are looking at it in a negative way,” he said.
