Hambantota District Engineer in Charge of excavations of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau and his driver were arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption on Thursday night on suspicion of accepting a gratification of Rs. 300,000 from a businessman in Mamadala in Ambalantota.
They were arrested on a complaint received from the businessman supplying sand for construction works that the suspects demanded a gratification to issue a sand mining permit.
The suspects were handed over to Ambalantota Police for further action. They were to be produced before Hambantota Magistrate yesterday.
A team of Investigators of the Bribery Commission under CI R.D.J. Pushpakumara had carried out the raid and arrested the two suspects.
