IGP urged to conduct investigations

By Yohan Perera

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MPs Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara are in a soup as an investigation is to be conducted against them over alleged threatening of police personnel stationed at the MPs entrance in Parliament on Thursday.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene who was responding to requests made by Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardene and Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando said he will request the IGP to carry out a probe on the incident. “I will announce the action that will be taken against the two MPs once I receive a report from the IGP,” the Speaker said.

Mr. Gunwardene said the MPs Fernando and Nanayakkara have threatened the policemen at the MP’s entrance when they have told the MPs that they cannot allow a parcel which the MPs tried to take inside. “Policemen had tried to prevent the MPs from taking the parcel inside as it contained some unlawful items. The MPs have threatened the policemen saying that they would be interdicted,” Mr. Gunawardene said.

“We request you to take quick action against the MP s as anyone could push the House towards danger by bringing in anything inside,” he told the Speaker.

Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said things have been happening in the House during the past and it has become almost a tradition. “There have been instances where a wreath was kept in front of the seat where former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was seated some years ago. However we look forward for the Speaker’s decision,” he said,

SJB MP Chaminda Wijesiri who joined in the cross talk alleged that there is a move to arrest MP Fernando over this incident.

Chief Government Whip Johnston Fernando who responded said there is no move to arrest any opposition MP. “It is important that we ensure the safety of Parliament. One has to remember that the parliamentary complex was bombed in the past,” Mr. Fernando said.
