A disagreement between Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and the board of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) stands in the way of appointing its Chief Executive officer.
The NMRA board of directors recently conducted interviews and selected one to the key post. However, Mr. Rambukwella has raised objections to it saying he, as the subject minister, should be consulted in the appointment of the incoming CEO of the NMRA. Daily Mirror learns that he has accused the NMRA board of violating the legal protocol.
However, the board believes that the law says the board should only consult the subject minister but not seek his approval. Also, the law does not empower the minister to cancel the appointment done without consulting him.
