The health authorities yesterday scotched speculation that mothers should stop breast-feeding upon vaccination against Covid-19, particularly with Sinopharm.
Addressing the regular press conference, Dr. Dinesh Koggalage, the Director of the Health Promotion Bureau of the Health Ministry, said there is no truth in such speculation, and therefore no one should stop breastfeeding their children after getting their jabs.
“In Sri Lanka, women are not vaccinated immediately after childbirth. But, they can be given the jabs immediately according to the guidelines stipulated by the World Health Organisation WHO). However, we administer the shots after six months. No mother should stop breast feeding,” he said.
He said the health authorities were using the same vaccine for administering both the shots at the moment, but the epidemiological authorities would decide on the ‘mix and match’ of different Covid-19 vaccines later after analysing data available in the world.
