Heavy rains exceeding 100mm are expected in some parts of the country due to unprecedented activation of the Southwest Monsoon conditions over the country, the Department of Meteorology said yesterday.
A spokesman from the Department told Daily Mirror that the Southwest Monsoon conditions have commenced within the month of August for the first time in the recent past. “Heavy showers above 100mm are expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts during the coming days,” the department forecast.
In addition rains are expected in the Uva Province, along the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Hambantota District as well. High winds are expected along the sea areas off the island.
