Heavy rain experienced in the hill country resulted in the hydro power reservoirs reaching spill level yesterday.

Two spill gates in the Maussakelle Reservoir were opened last morning when it reached spill level. Engineers said the reservoir with a capacity of 95, 400 acres fed the Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya, Wimalasurendra and Canyon hydro-power reservoirs.

Meanwhile, three spill gates in the Kotmale Reservoir had opened automatically when it reached spill level in the early hours of last morning.

Asst. Director Nuwara Eliya Disaster Management Centre Ranjith Alahakoon said the catchment area of the reservoir is experiencing heavy rainfall and that the other spill gates would open automatically if the heavy rain persisted.

He warned people living in low lying areas of the dam to be cautious of a possible flood threat.
