The Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry said hotline numbers were introduced for obtaining information and details relating to obtaining electric vehicle import permits.

They said the numbers were introduced to allow Sri Lankan migrant workers remitting money through formal channels to import electric vehicles.

Accordingly, the necessary information can be obtained by the migrant workers by contacting the Ministry via the hot-line numbers 0773 039 034 or 0112 368 175 or by contacting the Senior Assistant Secretary (Control) of the Ministry on 0112 582 447.

Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara recently obtained approval from the cabinet to allow migrant workers to import electric vehicles based on the amount they remit to the country through legal channels.

From May 1, 2022, to April 30, 2023, a migrant worker who remitted more than 3,000 US dollars through official channels will be granted a license to import an electric motorcycle with a CIF value that is 50% less than the amount sent. Those who have transferred more than 20,000 US dollars from May 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022 will be permitted to import an electric car.

Accordingly, the migrant workers will get the opportunity to import an electric car, a double cab, a van or a tipper truck.

The applications for obtaining the relevant vehicle import licenses have now been published on the official websites of the Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) .

The applications should be completed and submitted to the Ministry along with all relevant documents, Minister Nanayakkara added.
