A team from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is to visit Sri Lanka shortly to look into the matter with regard to former MP Ranjan Ramanayake, SJB MPs Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara said yesterday.

Speaking via Facebook, the MPs said the IPU has promised to send in a delegation to look into the matter pertaining to Mr. Ramanayake shortly. “IPU officials whom we met assured that the team which will visit Sri Lanka also plans to visit Mr. Ramanayake in jail,” Mr. Nanayakkara said.

“IPU officials also told us that they have already made an official request from the present government to release Mr. Ramanayake and that they will pursue their efforts continuously to get Mr. Ramanayake freed,” he added.
MP Fernando said they informed the IPU and UNHRC, Geneva that they do not expect to see Sri Lanka coming under any sanctions. “We have told those whom we have met that our objective is not to get the UN or any country to impose economic sanctions on Sri Lanka. We told them that our sole attempt is to get Mr. Ramanayake freed,” he said.
