An individual who had in his possession ten counterfeit notes of Rs.1,000 denomination and two of Rs.5,000 denomination was arrested by the Tissamaharama Police yesterday during a raid on his house in Gemunupura in Debarawewa in Tissamaharama.
During the raid the police had seized machinery and equipment used by the suspect to print currency notes. A senior police official said it was difficult to distinguish between the suspect’s counterfeit note and the genuine currency notes.
Investigations revealed that the suspect was a Laboratory Assistant at the Beraligala Junior School. Police suspect that he had been carrying on the racket for a long time.
The suspect was to be produced before Tissamaharama Magistrate yesterday.
