The inter tropical convergence and the increased temperature in the sea will give rise to current atmospheric disturbances and cyclonic storms in Sri Lanka, the Department of Meteorology said yesterday.
“The disturbances which we are experiencing currently is a result of the inter tropical convergence situation. The winds which blows from the Southern hemisphere and the Northern hemisphere meet somewhere close to Sri Lanka these days. In addition, the temperature of the sea where the Bay of Bengal is located have also increased. All these conditions causes the atmospheric disturbances and cyclonic storms,” an official from the Department of Meteorology told Daily Mirror.
Meanwhile the department said the low-level atmospheric disturbance that is currently prevailing over the South East Bay of Bengal area will gradually develop into cyclonic storm in the coming days.
Fishing and naval community were requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard, the Department said.
Showers or thundershowers are expected at times across the island while the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Galle and Matara will be fairly rough.
