The Railways Department has taken steps to peg out the boundaries of the Kelani Valley railway under the proposed plan to augment the railway line from Avissawella to Ratnapura.    The narrow gauge railway from Colombo to Opanayake, constructed by the British in 1919 was closed beyond Avissawella by the United Front Government in 1976. Later the narrow gauge line up to Avissawella was developed as a broad gauge railway line.

A senior official of the SLR said under the proposed plan the broad gauge line would be augmented from Avissawella to Ratnapura through Getahettha, Eheliyagoda, Parakaduwa and Kuruvita.
He said the occupants on land within the boundaries of the railway line are required to vacate on short notice.
Pegging out of boundaries in Kuruvita area is now going on.
