The report published in the Daily Mirror on the killing of Blue whales in Puttalam had prompted the Ministry of Environment to initiate a probe on the matter.

Minister of Environment Naseer Ahamed who was responding to a question raised by SLPP MP Yadamini Gunawardene in the House quoting the Daily Mirror, said the matter will be looked into without delay.

“ The matter does not come under the purview of my Ministry as it comes under Marine Pollution prevention institutions, However we will see what action can be taken against the killing of whales,” he said.  “ There were reports in the media on the use of various explosives to kill Dolphins, and Whales at Kalpitiya in the Puttalam District. This creates a grave environment issue Even the Daily Mirror carried a front page news with regard to the matter. I thank the Daily Mirror for it. We would like to know what action has been taken against the move,” Gunawardene said.
