Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena who heads the parliamentary select committee on electoral reforms said the government could go for the local authorities’ election after fresh reforms for a mixed electoral system ensuring better representation for youths.
He said it in his address to the youth convention of his party, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP).
The youth convention adopted a resolution calling for a mixed electoral system. The Minister said the committee led by him in Parliament was in the process of evolving electoral reforms. Once that is done, he said, the local government elections could be considered.
