The price of a Laugfs gas has been increased due to the rupee depreciating against the dollar, Deputy Chairman of Laugfs Gas Thilak de Silva said.
Accordingly, the price of a 12.5 kg cylinder had increased to Rs.4,199 while a 5kg cylinder increased to Rs 1,680. Also, the price of a 2kg cylinder increased to Rs. 672.
Mr. Silva said that the company had incurred around Rs.1 billion loss due to the rupee depreciating against the dollar.
The government has decided to remove controlled prices of several essential items including milk powder, gas, wheat flour, and cement which was imposed from October last year.
The Deputy Chairman said that Laugfs had faced over Rs.5 billion loss within the last three years due to price controls.
He said the prices of gas will have to be increased compared to the world market and the exchange rates of dollars to maintain their supply and the company.
